Ekaterina Abadjieva [Who am I]
I am a middle-aged woman, born in a small Bulgarian town. I grew up in my hometown until my adolescence when I moved to Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria) to study in an English language school. It was a difficult part of my life, because I was a little girl living in a big town and I had to start making my own choices at a very early age. Most of the time I used to live in a boarding house with other girls who were not always friendly. This continued through my University years and made me a sociable and understanding person and a good team player.
I have always wanted to live an exciting life and to be different from the other people. The first thing I did in my search for uniqueness was to take up parachute jumping. It was a thrilling experience, but I was not much of a sports person, so I did not do it long — only for four years. However, my love for sports stayed forever and I continued going hiking, swimming, jogging, etc. This has also developed in me some qualities like hard work, perseverance, and determination.
Then was my marriage to my husband, Stanislav Abadjiev, who is an exceptional person and who has given me a lot of love. He has been the one to build bridges spanning the chasms in our relationship whenever they appeared.
I also met many interesting people while studying at school and at the University of Sofia. I grew up along with many friends, two of which I shall never forget: Katya Yancheva and Emilia Ilieva. I had the privilege to be taught by first-class teachers like Mrs Mutafchieva, who loved me and helped me whenever she could; Dimitar Spassov, Ekaterina Dimova, Zhana Molhova, Alexander Shurbanov, Natalia Klisurska and Vera Despotova — all of them renown lecturers and devoted teachers at the University of Sofia.
I have had exceptional friends and colleagues everywhere I have been: Mariana Vassileva (from Kyustendil), Hristo Stoimenov and Emil Yanev (from the Balkantourist office), Vasilka Atanasova, Veska Ilieva, Bonka Ilieva, (from the Regional Secondary School of Mathematics in Kyustendil), Tsveta Damyanova, Emilia Lazarova and Galya (from the Faculty of Biology in Sofia), Mila Ivanova (from AVO-3) and many others.
But the greatest and most memorable period of my life was when I first heard the true story of Jesus Christ and started to understand His greatness and His love superbly expressed on the Cross of Golgotha. In fact I have been hearing from Him ever since I was born (most of the time without knowing it). He has revealed Himself through all the people, events, and experiences in my life. He has shown me the difference between good and bad and helped me to seek, choose and pursue the latter rather the former, although many times it has been the more difficult option. He has saved me from many mistakes and has carried me through a lot of hardships and sorrows, always giving me a way out and building me up.
He has given the best friends and colleagues I have ever had: Sdravko and Krasimira Nenovi, Milka Zaikova, Pepa Kostova, Yuliana Balkandjieva, Mariana Ivanova, Simeon Penchev, Carolien and Lucas Kasper, and a numberless multitude of others. He gave me my compassionate and always available sister Snezhana and my wonderful niece Dessislava and her family. He gave me three lovely children — Anastasiya, Peter, and Yordanka, the last of which He took back to Himself soon after she was born to be with Him and enjoy His presence. Right at the very beginning of my life He gave me my incredibly good mother Dafinka and my supporting father Yordan, and later my unforgettable father-in-law Pencho Abadjiev, a unique man and doctor who helped many people and who made serving others the guiding principle of his life.
He is now with me every day of my life, providing for my every day needs, patiently enduring my mistakes, teaching me to live a better life, giving me hope in this hostile world.
